This page gathers the stones in our collection whose body colour reads black. In nature a truly dark body tone is uncommon, and in our current selection it is represented by Black Star Sapphire — a member of the corundum family whose deep colour is paired with asterism, the silvery star that glides across the dome as the stone is moved.
Asterism arises from fine, needle-like inclusions arranged along the crystal's growth directions. Light striking these needles is reflected back as intersecting bands, most often forming a six-rayed star. Because the phenomenon depends on reflection from within the stone, star sapphires are cut as cabochons rather than faceted: the smooth, domed surface collects light and focuses the rays, while a flat base preserves weight and depth of colour.
When comparing pieces here, weigh the sharpness and completeness of the rays, how centrally the star sits on the dome, and the contrast between the bright ray and the dark ground. Dome height, symmetry and overall proportion also shape how the star behaves in everyday wear and how the stone will sit in a setting.
