This page gathers the stones in our collection whose geographical origin is Thailand. Thai deposits are associated with basaltic geology, and the material they yield has long been valued for its depth of tone and its distinctive inclusion scenes. Two varieties are represented here: Blue Sapphire and Black Star Sapphire — both members of the corundum family, both coloured and characterised by trace elements and internal structure rather than by any surface quality.
Blue sapphire owes its colour to iron and titanium within the corundum lattice. Material from basaltic sources is often described as having a deeper, more saturated blue, sometimes reading slightly inky in larger sizes — a quality many collectors seek deliberately. Black Star Sapphire is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, because its appeal is optical: fine oriented needle-like inclusions reflect light as a star, or asterism, which moves across the dome as the stone is tilted.
When choosing between them, consider how the stone will be worn and lit. Faceted blue sapphire rewards bright, directional light with brilliance; a star sapphire needs a single light source to show its rays clearly. Each individual listing states the stone's own weight, dimensions, cut and treatment status.
