This page gathers the emeralds we offer under the trade name Muzo. Muzo is not a gemstone species or variety but a provenance term, drawn from the historic emerald-bearing district of Muzo in the Boyacá region of Colombia. For that reason only one variety appears here: Colombian Emerald, the green form of the mineral beryl.
Emerald owes its colour to traces of chromium and vanadium within the beryl structure. Material associated with Muzo has long been described in the trade as a warm, pure to very slightly yellowish green, in contrast to the cooler blue-greens often attributed to other Colombian workings. These are broad tendencies rather than rules, and colour should always be judged stone by stone.
When choosing between pieces here, weigh colour first — depth of green and evenness of saturation carry an emerald more than size. Then consider crystal, the transparency and life of the stone, as emerald is characteristically included and a fine 'jardin' is normal. Cutting matters too: a well-proportioned emerald cut returns light evenly rather than showing windows. Treatment and any laboratory documentation are stated on each individual listing.
