Royal Blue is a trade description rather than a species or a laboratory grade. It denotes a deep, saturated blue of medium to medium-dark tone, often with a faint violet undercurrent, that reads as pure and vivid rather than inky. Because the term describes colour appearance, it can be applied across more than one gemstone, and this page gathers the stones in our collection whose hue, tone and saturation sit within that description.
Two varieties appear here. Blue Sapphire, the blue variety of corundum, owes its colour to trace iron and titanium and pairs that blue with exceptional hardness and a crisp, bright lustre. Tanzanite, the blue to violet-blue variety of zoisite, is strongly pleochroic, so the same stone can show blue, violet and occasionally reddish flashes depending on viewing direction and how the cutter oriented it.
When choosing between them, weigh durability and intended setting alongside colour: sapphire is the more robust choice for daily wear, while tanzanite is softer and more sensitive to knocks. Always judge colour under more than one light source, and read the individual stone's report and treatment disclosure.
