This page gathers the stones in our collection whose body colour reads as tan — a warm, softly neutral brown that sits between beige, honey and smoky coffee. Tan is a subtle colour rather than a saturated one, and it rewards close looking: much of its character comes from how light behaves inside the stone rather than from depth of hue alone.
The varieties represented here are tan tourmaline, zircon and tan zircon, aquamarine and sphene. Tourmaline offers the broadest tonal range, from pale sandy tones to deeper warm browns. Zircon is prized for its high refractive index and strong dispersion, which gives tan material an unusually lively, almost metallic brightness. Sphene carries exceptional dispersion of its own, breaking white light into visible flashes of spectral colour against a warm ground. Aquamarine appears where stones sit at the gentlest, most neutral end of their colour range.
When choosing, weigh tone against liveliness. A lighter tan will show more brilliance and dispersion; a deeper tan gives a richer, quieter presence. Cut precision matters greatly in neutral colours, as light return does much of the work.
