This page gathers the stones in our collection whose origin is Tanzania, a country whose geology has given gemmology some of its most distinctive modern additions. Northern Tanzania in particular is associated with tanzanite, the blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, and the wider region has long produced garnets, tourmalines and zircons alongside it.
The varieties you will find here are tanzanite, rose garnet, pink garnet, chrome tourmaline and zircon. Each offers a different optical character. Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic, showing blue, violet and sometimes burgundy depending on the direction of view, which makes cutting orientation central to its final colour. Chrome tourmaline owes its vivid green to chromium and vanadium. The rose and pink garnets sit in the raspberry-to-pink range and are singly refractive, giving a clean, even colour. Zircon has notably high refractive index and dispersion, producing lively fire when well cut.
When choosing between them, weigh colour preference against durability for the intended setting: tanzanite and zircon are softer and less tough than garnet or tourmaline, and suit pendants, earrings or protected ring designs better than everyday wear. Always read the individual listing for each stone's stated treatment and dimensions.
