This page gathers every stone in our collection cut as a cushion — a squarish or gently rectangular outline with softly rounded corners and curved sides. Historically descended from the old mine cuts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the modern cushion balances a generous face-up spread with deep, rolling flashes of light. Facet arrangements vary: brilliant-style cushions scatter light into lively sparkle, while step-cut or mixed-cut cushions favour broader flashes and a clearer view into the body colour of the stone.
The varieties represented here are Aquamarine, Mozambique Ruby, Paraiba Tourmaline, Rubellite Tourmaline and Blue Zircon. Each behaves differently in this shape. Cushions hold colour well through the centre of the stone, which flatters the softer blues and greens of aquamarine and the saturated red of ruby alike, while the high refractive index of blue zircon and the electric hues of Paraiba tourmaline read with particular intensity.
When choosing between them, consider hardness and intended setting, the depth of the stone relative to its outline, and how much brilliance versus open colour you prefer. Treatment and origin details are disclosed on each individual stone's page.
