This page gathers the stones in our collection whose stated origin is Russia. Origin filters are for collectors who build around provenance — assembling a suite from a single country, or seeking material from a locality of particular historical interest. Because availability from any one source varies, the varieties listed here reflect what is genuinely in our hands rather than a complete account of Russian gemmology.
At present, the Russian selection is represented by bi-colour topaz. Bi-colour material shows two distinct colour zones within a single crystal, the result of variations in trace elements and colour centres as the crystal grew. Each stone is therefore unique in the placement, sharpness and balance of its zoning, and no two divide the same way.
When choosing between bi-colour topaz, weigh the orientation of the colour boundary against the outline of the cut: elongated step and emerald cuts tend to present both zones cleanly, while brilliant styles can scatter the division. Consider also the evenness of the two colours and how the stone reads face-up in daylight. Topaz is hard at 8 on the Mohs scale but has a distinct cleavage direction, so setting should protect the girdle and pavilion.
