Star Sapphire Properties
Blue Sapphire Stone or Corundum is the next hardest gemstones at 9.0 in Mohs Hardness after Diamond which has a 10.0 making sapphires very durable for everyday use.
Star Sapphire Colors
Star Sapphires are the same famous blue gemstones as regular sapphires. They can also be found in pink, yellow, orange, green, lavender and black. Iron and titanium make blue stones while vanadium creates violets to purple colored stones. Yellow and green hues and tones are created by a small amount of iron and pink-reddish tones are created by chromium.
Blue is the most desired color, and the more vivid and intense, the more desired it becomes. Star sapphires from Thailand are famed for showing a golden star instead of the more common white. When the pink color gets intense and has traces of chromium and iron these corundum are no longer sapphire and they become star ruby.
Star Sapphire Care
The hardness of Sapphires stones is second only to diamonds amongst natural gemstones. It also has no cleavage planes. Because of this, it is an excellent stone for jewelry.
